The story of Jephthah gives us some insight into this situation.
Judges 11
The man that God chooses is not always obvious. This man Jephthah was an outcast, an illigitimate son of a prostitute who was driven out and denied any part of his father's estate. We are told that "worthless men banded together with him". Judges 11:3 worthless being the no hopers, the outcasts, those not accepted by society. I recall that David drew these kind of people as did Jesus. There is something about these men who stood up for injustice.
Jephthah must have made a name for himself as a man who could command and order "worthless men". As we read on we find that he was educated in the history of Israel, God's people, as he reminds the king of Ammon that God's people only wanted to pass through their land and not fight for it, and there lies another principle of God's grace in that the land of plenty, the promised land is ours by inheritance, we need to claim it not wrestle for it. So often a battle rages within us to overcome the enemy in our lives when all that is required is a simple acknowledgement that God has already claimed the ground and won the battle for us and all we need to do is stand on that promise and claim our inheritance.
So "who is the man" that will lead the way? obviously, ultimately Jesus is the man but what about leadership here and now.
Jephthah proved he could lead men and had integrity. He was a man who knew his history, he had understood that it was God who fights battles and not man. Judges 11:14-28.
"The man" will have
- Integrity
- Know his history Judges 11:16-22 (What God has done)
- Be fearless Judges 11:3 (go where others won't)
- Spirit Judges 11:29 (of God) in them
So who is "the man" is it you or is it me? Whoever it is we need to be ready to answer the request "come and be our commander" Judges 11:6. Are we using our time wisely? researching our spiritual history and heritage, able to give an answer, when required, of the hope that is within us and able to lead God's people into a place of spiritual victory.
